Middle class appears to be underattack as Obama’s term ends

DALTON, Georgia (Reuters) – Barack Obama enters the final two years of his presidency with a blemish on his legacy that looks impossible to erase: the decline of the middle class he has promised to rescue.
The revival of middle-class jobs has been one of Obama’s mantras since he took office in 2009 fighting the worst economic crisis in generations. It was a major theme of his last State of the Union address and is expected to feature in the one scheduled for Tuesday.
Administration officials said on Saturday the president would propose higher capital gains taxes, new fees on large financial firms, and other measures to raise $320 billion for programs and tax breaks aimed at the middle class.
Obama’s administration can take credit for stabilizing the U.S. economy, which is growing again and last year added jobs at the fastest clip since 1999.
But for the middle class the scars of the recession still run deep. Federal Reserve survey data show families in the middle fifth of the income scale now earn less and their net worth is lower than when Obama took office.
In the six years through 2013, over the recession and recovery that have spanned Obama’s tenure, jobs have been added at the top and bottom of the wage scale, a Reuters analysis of labor statistics shows. In the middle, the economy has shed positions – whether in traditional trades like machining or electrical work, white-collar jobs in human resources, or technical ones like computer operators.
The trend is in plain sight in Dalton, Georgia, a manufacturing hub 90 miles (145 km)north of Atlanta. Massive factories that made it “the carpet capital of the world,” were slammed by the collapse of the housing bubble. During the recession, with machines idle, they began investing heavily in new technology and are now laying plans to restore some lost jobs.
But the new positions are more skewed to the high and low end, and there will be fewer of them per dollar of output than before the recession, said Brian Anderson, president of the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce.
“We can produce a whole lot of new carpet with not a lot more people,” Anderson said. Companies have spent between $1.5 and $2 billion on retooling and innovation, reducing demand for labor, while higher than average regional unemployment continued to hold down wages, he said.
MORE INVESTMENT, FEWER JOBS
Firms like flooring giant Shaw Industries pared jobs – dropping 5,000 from a pre-recession labor force of 28,000 – but with new technology have rebuilt revenue to near previous levels. The company is boosting wages for master mechanics to around $30 an hour, but feels no pressure to increase wages for the unskilled positions it retains.
The heavy investment in robotics and mechanization has raised expectations, said Paul Richard, Shaw’s vice president of human resources. “It has put more emphasis on associates that can bring technical skills.”
Ahead of Obama’s annual address, the business community is expecting the president to press for passage of the Trans-Pacific trade treaty, though a debate rages within the Democratic Party over whether that would create more middle class jobs than would be lost to increased imports.
Others say he may seek more overtime pay for mid-level salaried workers, propose a higher federal minimum wage, or renew calls for major infrastructure spending.
Along with the tax plan, Obama has proposed expanded access to community college education and improved family leave policies, while some of his allies have called for an outright wealth transfer from the top to the middle.
For Obama’s legacy none of that may matter.
The forces at work in the American economy appear so entrenched that Obama may be remembered as the president who pulled the nation from its worst downturn since the Great Depression, but failed to arrest deepening economic inequality.
The Federal Reserve, under Obama appointee Janet Yellen, has put money in almost all Americans’ pockets with near zero interest rates that have held down mortgage payments, allowed companies to reinvest, and boosted job creation.
But the Fed’s Survey of Consumer Finances shows how uneven the distribution of that stimulus has been. Between 2010 and 2013, as recovery took hold and stock markets soared, the average net worth of families in the top 40 percent of income earners grew. For all others average net worth shrank, declining 19 percent for the middle fifth.
Similarly, the average earnings for families in the top 10 percent grew more than 9 percent from 2010 through 2013, while those at other levels stagnated or shrank. For the middle fifth, average earnings fell 4.6 percent.
Over the six years through 2013, the middle fifth’s average annual family earnings fell to $47,243 from $53,008 while their average net worth dropped to $170,066 from $236,525.
Obama “had a good start in ending the recession and a good start to recovery and then we were knocked off that trajectory,” said Josh Bivens, an economist with the Economic Policy Institute, a left-leaning think tank that advocates higher minimum wages and other policies to boost incomes.
Bivens blamed the end of stimulus programs and a standoff in Congress over the federal debt ceiling that curbed government spending for the loss of initial momentum.
To a degree the administration has also been a captive of broad technological and global trends. Automation and the offshoring of manufacturing and service jobs continue to transform industries and communities such as Dalton.
Obama’s changing rhetoric over time appears, increasingly, to acknowledge the magnitude of the challenge.
In 2011, he called the erosion of middle class jobs a “Sputnik moment” that should energize the country to out-produce and out-innovate the rest of the world. By last year, the tone was more tempered: “The cold, hard fact is that even in the midst of recovery, too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by – let alone get ahead. And too many still aren’t working at all,” Obama said in last year’s State of the Union address “Our job is to reverse these trends. It won’t happen right away.”

Director found DEAD of apparent suicide. Or so they say…

This post is from : http://www.xrayultra.com/news/writerdirector-of-gray-state-found-dead-of-apparent-murder-suicide-video-analysis
Click link above to read orig. article.

David T. Crowley, his wife Komel, and their 5-year-old daughter Rani, have been found dead inside their Apple Valley home in what police are calling an apparent murder-suicide. David Crowley is the writer and director of a movie-in-progress called “Gray State.”

The trailers from the unfinished movie show scenes of a militarized police force, FEMA agents spying on and killing hundreds of Americans, gun violence and citizen insurgency. The tagline for the film is “The Second American Revolution may not be remembered.” YouTube videos show Crowley promoting the film at several events, including at a Ron Paul rally in Florida in 2012.
Crowley’s former business partner, Mitch Heil, said Sunday he was “heartbroken” to hear about the deaths. “He’s been one of my best friends since high school,” he said. The two men were friends in high school and then joined the Army together. After basic training, they were stationed in different places but came back together again in the Twin Cities to form a company called The Bullet Exchange, which trained actors to use weapons for film. Heil hadn’t spoken to Crowley since September when they parted ways in business. He said it was normal for Crowley to hunker down to write and then surface several months later, so he didn’t think it was odd that they hadn’t spoken.

Crowley was a charismatic leader and very creative person, Heil said. “When it came to business stuff, he was the brains behind everything. I was just there assisting him to reach his vision.” Although Crowley had met with people in California about getting “Gray State” made, nothing had panned out, Heil said. Crowley met his wife while he was stationed in Texas, where she lived, and they married shortly before he was deployed to Iraq. On his LinkedIn profile, Crowley said of his time in the military, “After five years I had enough and left to pursue filmmaking.”

“They had a great marriage,” Heil said. “He was a great person, a great friend,” he said. Heil is listed on the “Gray State” trailer as the movie’s director of photography. Actor Charles Hubbell, who starred in the movie trailer, contacted Heil about a month ago saying he had been trying unsuccessfully to reach Crowley. “It’s always great to have young, gorgeous people come to our house and look as happy as they are,” said Hubbell. “They were gorgeous, and they had this happy and bubbly and talkative child.”

The bodies may have been there for up to four weeks before they were found Saturday afternoon; neighbors next door and across the street said they hadn’t seen the family since before Christmas. The family’s dog was still alive, but wild and aggressive when police arrived, said neighbor Collin Prochnow, who discovered the bodies. Inside the Crowleys’ home on Sunday, a small tinsel tree sat on the kitchen island/bar and a string of garland hung from it. The sectional sofa in the living room was torn apart, apparently by the dog, the Prochnows said, as were several small stuffed animals on the floor. The mailbox and front stoop were bare.

Prochnow had assumed the Crowleys had gone out of town for awhile and shoveled their driveway a couple of times, even though they usually did it themselves. When Prochnow and his wife returned from an out-of-town visit, he noticed packages had piled up on the front stoop. Shortly after 12:30 p.m. Saturday, he walked next door to take the packages to his home. Prochnow rang the doorbell, but no one answered, except he heard a dog barking inside the home. When he glanced through the large front window, Prochnow said he saw three bodies on the ground with a black handgun next to them.

“To me, they just didn’t look human,” Prochnow said. “He came home and said there were dummies [mannequins] on the floor. And a gun,” his wife, Judy, added. She said another neighbor commented to her about the curtains at the Crowleys’ home being wide open when, usually, they were closed. But neither the Prochnows nor Alice and Bill Hixson, who live across the street, heard any gunshots or a dog barking. “Never heard any yelling, never heard any screaming, a husband and wife fight or anything like that,” Collin Prochnow said. He recalled a night in December when he awoke to something that sounded like gunshots but never thought anything of it until he found the bodies. “Shock. You have something that happens like that next door and you don’t really know when it happened. And the little girl, why did they have to take the little girl with them when they do things like that?”

Prochnow said David Crowley was a filmmaker, who wrote and directed a recent film about the militarization of the U.S. called “Gray State.” Crowley appeared in an online program two years ago to promote the film, which has not been released. The film’s website states a crowd funding campaign raised more than $60,000 to make the film. Komel Crowley was a self-employed registered dietitian who operated a business called MindBody Dietitian. Her website said she offered services for everything from eating disorders and weight problems to autoimmune disorders, autism and fatigue. Her profile said she was an amateur cake decorator, and she was active on Pinterest. She studied at the University of Minnesota and her LinkedIn page shows she previously worked at Park Nicollet’s Melrose Center, specializing in treating eating disorders.

Photos on David Crowley’s Instagram account show him posing with an arsenal of firearms in his garage. One image shows him in a flak jacket, another in a gas mask. Neighbors had also seen guns in his garage, but didn’t know if the weapons and paraphernalia were real or props for his movie.Crowley’s father, Daniel, who lives in Owatonna, Minn., said he hadn’t heard from his son and daughter-in-law over the holidays. “We tried,” he said in a brief telephone interview.

Real estate records show the Crowleys bought the house in December 2013. The Prochnows said David Crowley seemed like a good dad and had a trampoline set up in the back yard during the summer. Their grandchildren used to play with the Crowleys’ daughter. Alice Hixson and her husband, Bill, said they saw the father and his daughter playing in the back yard. “It’s such a grisly, gruesome thing,” Alice Hixson said. The neighbors said Crowley changed his appearance last fall, cut his hair short and started wearing fatigues. “We noticed the change in his appearance,” Collin Prochnow said. “His personality didn’t seem to change. We never got into any kind of politics.”

By early Sunday afternoon, no police tape remained at the scene on Ramsdell Drive, a neighborhood of middle-class homes. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office are assisting the Apple Valley Police Department with the investigation. According to police radio messages recorded by MnPoliceClips.com, police reported finding the “obviously deceased bodies” on the first floor of the home, along with a “very angry dog.” “That dog looked thin, and he was already skinny to begin with,” Prochnow said.

As we can see from these reports, there is no clear motive for this murder-suicide and from all outward appearances this was a healthy, beautiful family. The mainstream media is already harping on this man’s association with guns, as can be seen in this Daily News article titled “Gun-toting Minnesota screenwriter, wife and 5-year-old found dead in apparent murder-suicide”. So it looks like this guy’s death is already being used to push an agenda. I think any reasoning individual would find these circumstances suspicious, but I have no doubt these poor people’s deaths will be written off as murder-suicide. This is a very troubling pattern we’ve seen before with people like William Cooper, Michael Hastings, and countless others who spoke up about the thugs and criminals who run the United States. And if I ever turn up in an “apparent suicide” like this, I hope none of you believe that bullshit. Well, that’s all for now. Stay safe and don’t be intimidated. I’ll see you later.

Flood of Illegal Immigrant Children into Texas Costing U.S. Taxpayers Billions

Flood of Illegal Immigrant Children into Texas Costing U.S. Taxpayers Billions

The surge of illegal immigrant minors rushing over the Rio Grande threatens to overwhelm the Texas Border Patrol, and new figures show the unexpected development will cost U.S. taxpayers more than $2 billion this year, 1200 WOAI news reports.

More than 1,000 unaccompanied immigrant children are arriving in the U.S. each week, according to figures released by the Department of Homeland Security, and some 60,000 are expected to arrive in the U.S. this year.  That is up ten times just since 2011.

U.S. Rep Henry Cuellar (D-Laredo), who represents a large portion of the border where the waves of unaccompanied children are arriving, says the situation is out of control.

“The Border Patrol is telling me, we need diapers, we need baby seats, so we can transfer them,” he said.

Some of the unaccompanied children are as young as three years old. More than 1,000 have been sent to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, and others are being sent to other locations far from the border because the flood has left Border Patrol housing facilities packed.

Cuellar says the flood of unaccompanied minors is costing taxpayers $252 per day per child.

“We are playing defense on the one yard line,” Cuellar told 1200 WOAI’s Michael Board.

U.S. Rep John Carter (R-Round Rock) said Obama Administration policies are to blame, saying federal talk about ‘amnesty’ and ‘a path to citizenship’ for young illegal immigrants has led to ‘thousands of children’ being smuggled into the U.S.’ The issue is threatening to torpedo any hope of immigration reform of any sort being approved in Congress this year.

Many of the young illegal immigrants are smuggled into the U.S. from Central America.  Honduras and Guatemala are among the worst governed countries in the world, with skyrocketing inflation, a brutal crime rate, and gangs running many cities.  The rate of violence in Honduras is the worst in the world, with the streets of Honduras more dangerous than Afghanistan or even Syria.

Cuellar says the key to dealing with this flood of young illegal immigrants is to work with Mexico to help that nation shore up its southern border.  Mexico, which has a well functioning economy and is emerging as a Latin American economic powerhouse, is now suffering an in migration of illegal immigrants for the first time.

“If we are going to be smart neighbors, I think we need to engage Mexico a lot more than we’re doing,” he said.

Many of the young illegals report horrific abuse at the hands of immigrant smugglers, including being raped, being physically assaulted, and being force to perform slave labor to ‘pay off’ the costs of their transportation.  Hiring a smuggler to take a 13 year old from Honduras to the United States is said to cost $9,000, or far more than the average Honduran family makes in a year.

Analysts say some illegals are actively ‘gaming’ the system, being given false hope by smugglers of some sort of blanket amnesty for children if they can make it into the U.S.  Some children are told, falsely, that after that ‘amnesty’ is granted, they will be able to bring their families into the U.S. as well.

One young Honduran told Reuters that she didn’t think that entering the United States was illegal.

“Everybody in my home town was doing it,” she said.

By DAVID MARTOSKO, U.S. POLITICAL EDITOR

President Barack Obama is calling tens of thousands of illegal-immigrant children languishing in temporary U.S. holding pens an ‘urgent humanitarian situation,’ but Republicans are pointing the finger of blame squarely at the White House.

Obama instituted an immigration policy that the GOP says enticed tens of thousands of Central American children to cross America’s southern border illegally without any parents to guide them.

More than 33,000 have been picked up in Texas alone since October. The U.S. border patrol says its forces are overwhelmed, and the courts are bracing for a flood of immigration cases from children held in temporary detention facilities designed to handle a fraction of the numbers. Sanitation problems are beginning to rear their ugly heads.

Obama rolled out a controversial Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in 2012, allowing many illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as minors to escape deportation for two years. The White House gave them another two-year window last week.

As a result, say some GOP leaders, America’s system for handling illegal immigration has been strained to the breaking point and is attracting hundreds of new illegal-immigrant children every day.

Compared to the year before Obama’s policy took effect, twelve times as many kids are coming north illegally this year.

A half-century-old section of a U.S. Air Force base in Texas is now a holding and processing center for thousands of children who managed to enter the U.S. alone. The same is true of a Navy base in California.

And a makeshift detention center in Arizona holding 700 illegal immigrant children has ordered 2,000 mattresses to keep up with an expected influx in the coming months.

Judge: US ‘has simply chosen not to enforce … border security laws’

In a landmark court ruling in December, a federal judge ruled against the Department of Homeland Security for releasing a Salvadoran girl to her mother.

The mom had hired a smuggler to transport her daughter into the U.S., and was herself in the country illegally.

U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen wrote that ‘this court is quite concerned with the apparent policy of the Department of Homeland Security of completing the criminal mission of those who are violating the border security of the United States.’

‘The DHS,’ Hanen added, ‘should enforce the laws of the United States – not break them.’

Many of the children there were sleeping on plastic boards.

According to the Associated Press, toothbrushes and toothpaste hadn’t arrived yet and were expected Monday.

Hundreds of children had not bathed in days, and were taking turns using just four showers.

Tony Banegas, Honduras’ honorary consul in Phoenix, told the AP that there were 236 Honduran children there on Saturday, including an 8-year-old.

Republicans on Capitol Hill are beyond angry.

Leaked photos from the base, which were obtained by the Breitbart.com news blog, show hundreds of children holed up in crowded concrete rooms, many of them sleeping on the bare floor without blankets or pillows.

‘The recent surge of children and teenagers from Central America showing up at our southern border is an administration-made disaster,’ Virginia GOP Rep. Bob Goodlatte, who chairs the House Judiciary Committee, told Fox News last week.

‘Word has gotten out around the world about President Obama’s lax immigration enforcement policies and it has encouraged more individuals to come to the United States illegally,’ Goodlatte said in a statement.

‘Enforcement at the border and in the interior of the U.S.,’ not ‘another bureaucratic task force’ is needed, he claimed.

Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar, who sits on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, said Friday that ‘instead of having an application of the immigration law, we are taking mothers and children and dumping them … and violating the rule[s] over and over.’

The Obama administration expects as many as 80,000 of these ‘unaccompanied minors’ to cross the border in 2014, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

That number is twelve times what it was in 2011, the year before Obama announced his deferred-action plan.

The administration now estimates the holding facilities where the youngsters are being held cost taxpayers $252 per child per day, far more than the cost of a hotel and more than the children could expect to earn in two weeks of hard work picking crops, work that many were slated to do.

Facing the question of whether to deport the minors or play a game of catch-and-release, the administration has set aside $2 million to pay for their lawyers.

‘We’re taking a historic step to strengthen our justice system and protect the rights of the most vulnerable members of society,’ Attorney General Eric Holder said Friday in a statement.

‘How we treat those in need, particularly young people who must appear in immigration proceedings – many of whom are fleeing violence, persecution, abuse or trafficking – goes to the core of who we are as a nation.’

Obama’s ‘deferred action’ program for minors, which he announced in a fanfare-laden June 15, 2012 Rose Garden press conference, applies only to children who came to America before mid-2007.

‘It makes no sense to expel talented young people, who, for all intents and purposes, are Americans,’ the president said then.

But Capitol Hill is rife with fears that the message was garbled by the time it reach Guatemala, Honduras and other countries where poverty runs rampant. Many children traveling north on their own hope the policy will include them.

That’s what ‘coyotes,’ the smugglers who bring them in, are telling them to expect, according to Tania Chavez, a representative with La Union del Pueblo Entero, told KRGV-TV. in southern Texas.

The minors flooding over the border are often teenagers leaving behind poverty or violence in Mexico and other parts of Central America such as Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala.

With the president traveling in Europe last week, there have been no press briefings at the White House where questions might be put to outgoing press secretary Jay Carney.

But Obama met privately Monday morning with a group of nurses from across the country ‘to discuss the importance of passing commonsense immigration reform,’ according to the White House.

The Associated Press reported Monday that in a May 30 memo to the National Security Council’s transborder security directorate, Border Patrol Deputy Chief Ronald Vitiello warned that the influx of unexpected illegals has stretched the border patrol beyond reason.

But releasing them or reuniting them with family members in the United States would serve as ‘incentives to additional individuals to follow the same path.’

Republicans angered about the situation point to a federal judge who castigated the Obama administration for relaxing its immigration policy and encouraging human traffickers.

In a December ruling, U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen ripped the Department of Homeland Security for releasing a Salvadoran girl to her mother – a woman who had hired a smuggler to transport her daughter into the U.S., and was herself in the country illegally.

Hanen wrote that ‘this court is quite concerned with the apparent policy of the Department of Homeland Security of completing the criminal mission of those who are violating the border security of the United States.’

‘The DHS,’ he added, ‘should enforce the laws of the United States – not break them.’

In a related case, the El Paso Times reported Monday that a Catholic charity was assisting 130 illegal immigrant children flown to El Paso, Texas.

Many were traveling with their parents when they were apprehended trying to cross the U.S.-Mexico border.

One Guatemalan woman named Maria, who enter the United States with her two children, told the Times that she wanted to go to Tennessee to reunite with her sister.

Immigration officials, she said, had released her from custody and let her travel north.

‘Immigration told me, “You are free, you can leave”,’ she said.

Apocrypha and Lost Gospels Collection

In my studies I have found that not only do I enjoy reading texts that are not welcome to many / most religious faiths, but especially those that they deem as such evil that if you ask questions about it you are given the ‘stink’ eye. lol.

Anyway, for my own studies, I have scraped the web for as many lost gospels and apocryphal texts that I could find and I have added what I found below.

I do heed warning to those who do not read the bible regularly, who are new to the faith, and who do not know your bible very well or your God for that matter.  It is not smart to just sit down and read texts that you dont know how to filter.  It can be overwhelming and or confusing and  potentially misguided and or mis directional.

I recommend that who ever is reading this, if you choose to read ay of the texts please do so at own risk and understand that I read them for information, for learning ability, to test my own knowledge and understanding of Gods word and to see what stories from different prospective I find all surrounding Christ and much of the Bible.  There are times that what I read fills holes, and also that even deepens  the stores I read.

Enjoy.

Internet To Be Regulated

FCC Approves Plan to Regulate Internet

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski

WASHINGTON — The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday approved a plan to regulate the Internet despite warnings that it could strangle industry investment and damage an economy that is still struggling to recover.

The 3-2 vote fell along partisan lines with Democrats capitalizing on their numerical advantage.

The rules would prohibit phone and cable companies from abusing their control over broadband connections to discriminate against rival content or services, such as Internet phone calls or online video, or play favorites with Web traffic.

Lawmakers in both parties have been arguing for months that Congress, not the Obama administration, should take the lead role in deciding whether and how much to police the web. But despite a brief backing-off earlier in the year, the FCC pushed ahead with its new regulatory plan.

President Obama said in a statement that the plan “will help preserve the free and open nature of the Internet while encouraging innovation, protecting consumer choice, and defending free speech.”

“This decision is an important component of our overall strategy to advance American innovation, economic growth, and job creation,” he said.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski secured the three votes needed for approval, despite firm opposition from the two Republicans on the five-member commission.

Commissioner Robert McDowell, a Bush appointee, said the FCC’s plan “appears to some as an obsessive quest to regulate at all costs.”

“Some are saying that instead of acting as a cop on the beat, the FCC looks more like a regulatory vigilante,” he said.

Genachowski’s two fellow Democrats voted for the rules, even though they have said they consider them too weak.

Commissioner Michael Copps said Tuesday that he “seriously” considered voting against the plan.

“But it became ever more clear to me that without some action today the wheels of network neutrality would grind to a screeching halt for at least the next two years,” he said.

The outcome caps a nearly 16-month push by Genachowski to pass “network neutrality” rules and marks a key turning point in a policy dispute that began more than five years ago.

Genachowski said he’s proud of the process and the results, saying that the plan has drawn a wide range of support from technology and Internet companies to investors to labor, civil rights and consumer groups.

“Our framework has been supported by a number of broadband providers, as well, who recognize the sensible balance of our actions and the value of bringing a level of certainty to this broad issue,” he said.

But the move raises concern that the FCC could soon have its regulatory foot in the door of the wild wild West of the Internet — with an eye toward eventually exerting tighter control over content at a time when sites like WikiLeaks openly snub the government.

Republicans warn that the new rules would impose unnecessary regulations on an industry that is one of the few bright spots in the current economy, with phone and cable companies spending billions to upgrade their networks for broadband.

Burdensome net neutrality rules, they warn, would discourage broadband providers from continuing those upgrades by making it difficult for them to earn a healthy return on their investments.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told President Obama on Tuesday to leave the Internet alone, arguing that his administration has already nationalized health care, banks and student loans.

“That’s why I and GOP senators have urged the FCC chairman to back off,” he said on the Senate floor.

Sen. John Cornyn, whose amendment to prevent the FCC from regulating the Internet was blocked from a vote last week by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, said he was “disappointed” by the FCC’s vote.

“Clearly, the Obama administration did not hear the clarion call from Americans in November that stated that they did not want more government regulations and restrictions, like those imposed through the new health care law,” he said in a written statement. “Instead of trying to encourage our economic recovery, this administration has become a shackle to innovation and growth in America.”

Republicans, who will control the House and an additional five seats in the Senate in the next Congress, may try to overrule the regulation. Under the Congressional Review Act, Congress can strike down a regulation by passing a joint resolution.

A number of big Internet companies, including Netflix Inc., Skype and Amazon.com Inc., have previously expressed reservations about the plan as well.

But the FCC defended the new rules.

“We adopted today a strong and balanced order that has widespread support and that focuses on the importance of Internet freedom, the importance of private investment, the importance of business model experimentation,” Genachowski said at a news conference after the vote. “That’s why we have so many different people from various parts of the ecosystem supporting it. It’s a strong and balanced order. And I’m looking forward to talking with anyone who is interested.”

Rep. Ed Markey, D-Mass., a longtime supporter of net neutrality and author of the first ever net neutrality bill, said the FCC plan is not perfect and does not contain all the protections and priorities that he has advocated.

“Still, it does represent a step forward in the process of preserving the Internet as a vibrant marketplace for commerce and communications while fostering innovation and job creation now and in the future,” he said in a statement.

The chairman’s proposal builds on an attempt at compromise crafted by outgoing House Commerce Committee Chairman Henry Waxman, D-Calif., as well as a set of broad net neutrality principles first established by the FCC under the previous administration in 2005.

The rules would require broadband providers to let subscribers access all legal online content, applications and services over their wired networks — including online calling services, Internet video and other Web applications that compete with their core businesses.

But the plan would give broadband providers flexibility to manage data on their systems to deal with problems such as network congestion and unwanted traffic like spam as long as they publicly disclose their network management practices.

Senior FCC officials stressed that unreasonable network discrimination would be prohibited.

They also noted that this category would most likely include services that favor traffic from the broadband providers themselves or traffic from business partners that can pay for priority. That language was added to help ease the concerns of Genachowski’s two fellow Democrats.

The proposal would, however, leave the door open for broadband providers to experiment with routing traffic from specialized services such as smart grids and home security systems over dedicated networks as long as these services are separate from the public Internet.

Public interest groups fear that exception could lead to a two-tiered Internet — with a fast lane for companies that can pay for priority and a slow lane for everyone else.

They are also worried that the proposal lacks strong protections for wireless networks as more Americans go online using mobile devices.

The plan would prohibit wireless carriers from blocking access to any websites or competing applications such as Internet calling services on mobile devices. It would require them to disclose their network management practices too.

But wireless companies would get more flexibility to manage data traffic as wireless systems have more bandwidth constraints than wired networks.

“We are concerned that if these companies are allowed to block the applications consumers can access over their iPhones or BlackBerry devices, there’s nothing to keep them from censoring political speech,” said Bob Edgar, president of Common Cause. “The commission should look to ensure that net neutrality is fully extended to the wireless world.”

Still, Genachowski’s proposal is likely to win the support of the big phone and cable companies because it leaves in place the FCC’s current regulatory framework for broadband, which treats broadband as a lightly regulated “information service.”

Hollywood Star Has Had Enough of Bill Maher’s Activism: ‘Cripplingly Intellectually Abusive’

Actor Sean Astin believes that comedian Bill Maher is a “cripplingly intellectually abusive atheist” who does a disservice to thoughtful people with his “excessive need to promote atheism.”

Astin, who has starred in timeless films like “The Goonies,” “Rudy” and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, made these claims when he dropped by TheBlaze’s New York City newsroom last week to chat about his new movie “Moms’ Night Out,” Christianity and his decades-long entertainment career.

“I would love to talk to Bill Maher about his atheism … because I think he does a disservice,” the actor said, before turning to the camera to directly address Maher. “Bill, I think you do a disservice to intellectuals with your excessive need to promote atheism.”

Astin then chucked and wondered aloud whether his comments would land him an appearance on “Real Time With Bill Maher,” the comedian’s HBO show (according to the Interactive Movie Database, Astin was on the program back in 2004).

While the actor clearly disagrees with Maher’s tactics and believes he does a disservice to secularists, he did defend the entertainer’s right to free speech.

“People are certainly free to promote what they think and feel and I certainly think a lot of what Bill Maher says makes a lot of sense,” Astin continued. “But to kind of dismiss a feeling that millions of people are having is not not very generous of spirit.”

Watch the actor’s comments below:

TheBlaze will publish the full interview with Astin later this week.

‘I’m Done!’: Talk Show Host Storms Off Set After Heated Discussion Over Michael Sam’s Kiss With Boyfriend

A Texas talk show host stormed off set Tuesday after a heated discussion was ignited when she expressed disapproval of coverage showing Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend.

“Can we just agree that this was an opportunity to make news?” KTXD-TV’s “The Broadcast” host Amy Kushnir asked.

“He has every right to do what he wants, that’s not my issue,” she added. “I just don’t want it in my face.”

“Well, then maybe you don’t need to see romantic comedies or when people kiss on television,” one of the co-hosts shot back.

“Why does she not have the right to say what she means without being slandered?” another co-host countered.

Moments later, Kushnir gathered her belongings and stormed off the set.

“I’m done,” she said.

Muslim devouts calling for western believers to put on bomb vests and kill non believers

Devout Muslim group calls on Muslims in the West to strap on homicide vests and slaughter non-Muslims

They speak the universal language of jihad — no matter what part of the world they are in, the ummah all understand. It’s the same religious imperative that attracts Muslims from across Europe, the US, and Canada to Syria.

“Al Shabaab Video Calls for Lone-Wolf Attacks in the West,” By Anthony Kimery, Executive Editor, Homeland Security, May 13, 2014 (thanks to Christian)

The Somalia-based Al Qaeda affiliated jihadi group Al Shabab Al Mujahideen’s media wing, Al Kataib Foundation, in a video released Tuesday called for Muslims living in the West to “take your Istishhadi [suicide] vest” and carry out a lone-wolf attack.

“The video features a masked jihadi delivering a brief message in English. In it, the man speaks to Muslims living in the West, and asks them to choose from three options,” the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) said.

Aside from carrying out a suicide bombing, the man in the video calls for Muslims living in the West to leave everything behind and make hijra to join Al Shabab’s ranks or to stay in the West and be “deceived by the devil,” while living among “them” (non-Muslims).

The following is the message that was delivered by the masked individual in English:

“All praises are due to Allah, the only one. We praise Him and thank Him for all He has done. Peace and blessing be upon the one who was sent before the time, the last man sent as a message to mankind. This is a message to the youth in the West. A caring brother send[s] you a friend request. Allah is full of struggle, complete the test. So choose the following options, which is the best: You put your trust in Allah and take your Istishhadi vest. A lone-wolf mission, you know the rest. Second option: You leave it all. Your whole dunya [world], and your backpack. What you need more? Hijra and jihad is the smart call, just like the brothers in Westgate Mall [men shouting Allah Akbar]. Last option: deceived by the devil, you live amongst them, same job, same school. You befriend them. Judgment Day is near. What you’ve prepared then? Wake up from the dream and revive the deen again.”

“I know you, lion of this ummah, supported by the truth, you make a fine troop,” the message concluded. “So next flight Mogadishu, [and] who’s missing is you! [men shouting Allah Akbar].”

MEMRI Executive Director Steve Stalinsky told Homeland Security Today, “It should be pointed out that Al Shabaab is very active in its propaganda and recruitment efforts on social media; in addition, over the past year it has released multiple videos aimed at Somali youth abroad, particularly in the West, stressing lone-wolf attacks.”

“The latest video specifically addresses Somalis in Minnesota, as can be seen in the image of the ‘airline ticket,’ he said.

Stalinsky pointed out that, “Al Shabaab has been successful in its efforts to recruit Westerners from the US, Canada and the UK to come fight for their cause in Somalia. However, up until now, what they are calling for now, and have been calling for in the past year — that is, attacks in the West — have not been carried out.”

It should also “be noted,” Stalinsky said, “that Al Shabaab is promoting and following the message of Al Qaeda Central, which emphasizes lone-wolf attacks as announced in the June 3, 2011 video by Adam Gadahn titled, ‘Do Not Rely on Others, Take [the Task] Upon Yourself,’ and vigorously promoted by Inspire magazine.”

East Ukraine has a problem voting for independance

East Ukraine Votes for Independence – But There’s a Problem

Eastern Ukraine Donetsk Referendum
On Monday, Donetsk People’s Republic proclaimed itself a sovereign state. The Ukrainian military’s attempt to disrupt the referendum was not enough to dissuade voters. Unfortunately the situation just got more complicated.

Apparently the third time isn’t the charm for the Ukraine’s provisional government in Kiev. Coup appointed ‘authorities’ have attempted to launch three military offensives against dissidents in the east, and each attempt has been a resounding failure. The fact that Sunday’s referendum not only proceeded in spite of the military’s attempt to disrupt voting, but also resulted in a landslide victory for the separatists, speaks for itself.

Of course the U.S. and the E.U., the purveyors of democracy that they are, have declared the referendums illegal and say they will not honor the results. No surprise there.

Russia has declared that they respect the results of the referendum, but they have refrained from any official statement regarding how this will affect the Kremlin’s decision making in practical terms.

“Moscow respects the will of the people in Donetsk and Lugansk and hopes that the practical realization of the outcome of the referendums will be carried out in a civilized manner.” The Kremlin’s press service said on Monday.

Specifically there is the question of whether Donetsk will now join the Russian Federation. Immediately following the referendum the Donetsk People’s Republic declared itself a sovereign state, and someone within the leadership of the Donetsk People’s Republic sent Moscow a request for accession that same day. Russia has not responded to the request.

This request to join Russia is very problematic. First of all, the referendum did not address such a move at all. The wording that was voted on was the following:
“Do you support the creation of the Donetsk People’s Republic?”

The people of eastern Ukraine didn’t vote to join Russia, they voted to form their own republic. They haven’t held an election or even a constitutional convention to determine how the region will organize itself or how decisions will be made. Even if they had conducted elections, sending requesting integration into the Russian Federation isn’t the kind of decision that an elected president could make unilaterally. It would require a second referendum specifically addressing that question.

This is a bait and switch.

People have the right of self determination and Eastern Ukraine voted to take a different path than Kiev, however, to take that vote and stretch the meaning is a big mistake. The West is already looking for any excuse to discredit the referendum, and this gives them ammunition.

Ironically the request to join Russia actually proves that Russia isn’t running the show in the east. Putin would have never have authorized such a foolish move. The request places Russia in a very difficult position diplomatically. On one hand they would obviously like to accept it, but they aren’t stupid. They know that the wording of the referendum didn’t encompass this. They know that those that sent the request are acting unilaterally. Russia can’t accept the request, however they can’t easily reject it either. The last thing Russia wants to do is weaken the Donetsk Republic’s perceived legitimacy, and a public rejection would do just that.

A smarter move for Donetsk would have been to request financial assistance and organizational advice from Moscow to facilitate self rule. Obviously it would be tempting to request military assistance or at least weaponry in the light of the repeated attempts by Kiev to crush the resistance, but such a move would be interpreted as an act of war, and NATO would certainly respond in an aggressive manner. The West is going to do everything in their power to undermine and topple the Donetsk Republic, but unless Russia gives them a good excuse, their range of action will be limited to covert operations, condemnations, and perhaps sanctions.

So what’s next in Ukraine? Well, this is a human drama, and predicting what humans are going to do next is even harder than trying to predict the weather. Putin doesn’t want to risk his credibility on Donetsk prematurely. It is still too early to tell whether the region will be capable of pulling itself together and forming a working government. It would be damaging to Russia’s position if Moscow puts its weight behind the venture, only to have it implode a few months later.

The logical next step for Russia would be to send political advisers to Donetsk so that communication is direct and private. This would avoid awkward mistakes like the improvised (and public) request to join the Russian Federation. In that context that request could be dropped, or even publicly dismissed as the work of an individual acting without authority (which is in fact true). If positioning advisers in eastern Ukraine is isn’t feasible for political reasons, then at the very least representatives from eastern Ukraine should travel to Russia. After all, if they consider themselves a country, establishing a diplomatic mission with their closest neighbor is important.

Russia should also prepare to provide humanitarian support to the region. The provisional government in Kiev will cut utilities if the region breaks away politically. Russia is already having to scramble to replace electric service and water in Crimea after Kiev cut power and water lines to the peninsula. The West would have a difficult time demonizing Russia for helping the people of Donetsk reestablish electricity and running water especially if the work is contracted through the private sector, but providing this kind of logistical support could significantly influence the outcome.

Accepting the request for accession would be a strategic error. It is not in Russia’s interest to take control of a region that is embroiled in a civil war. Doing so would inevitably draw them into an open war with Kiev, which would give NATO a perfect excuse to intervene.

It’s like a game of chess where checkmate is three moves away. One mistake and you’re done for. Only in this game, checkmate is World War three.
